Hi Peter, the direct translation of “I love you” is “我爱你 | Wǒ ài nǐ”. You use this term if you are already in a close relationship with someone. Otherwise, I would not recommend you to say that. The Chinese are normally reserved and do not use this term as often as the westerner.

The other ways to express your love in a more subdued way is “I like you very much” depending on the intensity of your liking.

1) 我喜欢你。| Wǒ xǐhuān nǐ.
2) 我很喜欢你。| Wǒ hěn xǐhuān nǐ.
3) 我真的很喜欢你。| Wǒ zhēn de hěn xǐhuān nǐ.
